All-School Read

The Holderness All-School Read is an annual tradition for Holderness’s students, parents, faculty, staff, and alumni. The nominations are always inspired, sometimes silly, very often intellectual, riveting, passionate, and/or quirky. The pool is always wide-ranging, each newly nominated book stirring debate and ideas about what we read and why we read. Then, the Secret and August Committee meets—and voila! A book is chosen for all the community to enjoy during the summer break. When school commences in the fall, the conversations begin—on the paths to class, around the tables at dinner, and of course in the classrooms. What parts did you like? What surprised you? Would you read the book again? It’s a great way to begin the year as a community.

Educated
By Tara Westover

Tara Westover's memoir Educated is a gripping and gritty account of Ms. Westover’s journey from a 北京快3走势图-schooled childhood in Idaho to a master’s program in philosophy at Cambridge. The book recounts an astonishing life journey.

In her proposal for the 2019 All-School Read, French Teacher Janice Pedrin-Nielson wrote:

"What I like about this book is that it compellingly shows why it is important to be engaged in the world and not to cede the formation of one’s opinions to others be they family members, clergy, politicians, or internet conspiracy theorists.  As this generation says, 'Stay Woke.' It is quite inspirational, too!"

Keep this idea in mind as you read. It is one we will explore as a community as we discuss Educated together throughout the 2019-北京快3走势图 school year.
